In a groundbreaking moment for the nation’s hospitality scene, 33 Indonesian hotels and resorts have officially received the MICHELIN Key distinction, a first for the country and a defining step that places Indonesian hospitality firmly on the global map.

This year it extended its legacy beyond dining and into the art of hospitality, unveiling a new program that recognizes the world’s most exceptional stays. The MICHELIN Key is now to hotels what the MICHELIN Star is to restaurants, a symbol of uncompromising quality, authenticity, and service.

When the global rollout was announced in October 2025, it was no small feat that Indonesia emerged with a remarkable 33 properties on the list, spanning Bali, Jakarta, Sumba, Yogyakarta, and beyond. The selections celebrate hotels that not only deliver luxury but also express a profound sense of place, design, and soul.

From Mandapa, a Ritz Carlton Reserve in Ubud, to the wild beauty of Nihi Sumba and the architectural grace of Amanjiwo near Borobudur, Indonesia’s awardees represent the diversity and heart of the archipelago’s modern hospitality.

The Global Rollout and How It Began

The MICHELIN Key program was born from the brand’s vision to guide travelers toward extraordinary experiences, not just exquisite meals. While the MICHELIN Guide has recommended hotels for more than a century, the Key distinction introduces a clear hierarchy, a way to celebrate properties that go beyond comfort and embody inspiration.

On October 8, 2025, the first ever global MICHELIN Key selection was revealed, covering over 2,400 hotels across the world. Among them, Indonesia’s 33 awardees stood out for their mastery in design, service, sustainability, and storytelling.

Interestingly, this achievement was not the result of a government driven initiative. The selection process remained independent, conducted by anonymous MICHELIN inspectors. Yet, it aligns perfectly with the Indonesian government’s long standing mission to elevate the quality and international recognition of the country’s tourism industry. The Ministry of Tourism has not claimed direct involvement, but the success of these hotels speaks to years of effort by both public and private sectors to position Indonesia among the world’s most sophisticated travel destinations.

What Makes a MICHELIN Key Hotel

Each MICHELIN Key is earned, not granted. The distinction is awarded using five universal criteria that define an outstanding stay:

1. Architectural and interior design excellence
2. Quality and consistency of service
3. Character and personality of the property
4. Value for the price
5. Contribution to the neighborhood and sense of place

The MICHELIN Guide awards three levels of recognition:

• One Key represents a very special stay

• Two Keys represent an exceptional stay

• Three Keys represent an extraordinary stay

These benchmarks allow travelers to identify stays that combine creativity, comfort, and authenticity, whether it is a clifftop resort in Uluwatu, a heritage escape in Central Java, or a sustainable jungle retreat in Ubud.

The 33 Keys of Indonesia

Among the 33 Indonesian honorees, three earned the coveted Three Keys: Mandapa, a Ritz Carlton Reserve in Ubud, Nihi Sumba in Sumba, and Amanjiwo in Magelang.

Others, such as Buahan, a Banyan Tree Escape, The Sanchaya Bintan, Amankila Bali, Four Seasons Hotel Jakarta, and Raffles Bali, proudly carry Two Keys, reflecting exceptional design and impeccable service.

The One Key recipients include icons like Capella Ubud, Viceroy Bali, Lost Lindenberg, Blue Karma Village, and The Legian Seminyak, each telling a story that blends luxury with local spirit. Collectively, these hotels embody Indonesia’s strength in hospitality, a rare balance between nature, culture, and modern elegance.
