Restoring Bali’s Mangroves

The mangrove planting at Wana Segara Kertih is a central part of the anniversary program. Established by a group of fishermen in Jimbaran, the conservation area was created in response to the need to protect vulnerable coastal areas from abrasion while restoring degraded mangrove habitats.

Kappa Senses Ubud will plant Rhizophora mucronata seedlings, a mangrove species that plays an important role in reducing coastal erosion and wave impact, supporting marine ecosystems, and providing habitat for fish, crabs, and birds. The mangrove environment also contributes to the long-term resilience of local coastal livelihoods.

The work at Wana Segara Kertih is closely tied to the local community. Fishermen cultivate and sell mangrove seedlings, with proceeds reinvested into the area’s daily operations, replanting activities, conservation work, and ongoing maintenance. The model demonstrates how ecological restoration can support both environmental protection and a more sustainable community cycle.

The wider tree-planting program also addresses the importance of resilient landscapes as Bali experiences periods of heavy rainfall and flooding. Trees can help absorb rainwater, stabilize soil, and support biodiversity, while restored green spaces can strengthen the island’s ability to respond to changing environmental conditions.
