Viceroy Bali Earns GSTC Certification, Advancing Responsible Luxury in Ubud

The independent, family-owned resort has become one of the first properties in Ubud to receive certification from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, recognising its continued commitment to environmental responsibility, cultural preservation, and community engagement.

Viceroy Bali has achieved certification from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, marking a significant milestone in the resort’s long-term approach to responsible luxury and sustainable hospitality.

Located in the highlands of Ubud, the resort is among the first properties in the destination to receive the globally recognised certification. The achievement formally acknowledges Viceroy Bali’s efforts to balance exceptional guest experiences with environmental stewardship, the preservation of Balinese culture, and meaningful contributions to surrounding communities.

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council establishes international standards for sustainable travel and tourism. Its certification framework assesses hospitality businesses across four principal areas: sustainable management, socioeconomic benefits, cultural heritage preservation, and environmental responsibility.

More Than Two Decades of Responsible Hospitality

For more than 20 years, Viceroy Bali has sought to deliver personalised luxury experiences while protecting the natural and cultural qualities that define Ubud.

The certification recognises the resort’s ongoing work to strengthen its sustainability practices and generate a positive impact for guests, employees, local communities, and the environment. Rather than representing a single initiative, the achievement reflects a wider operational philosophy integrated across the property.

These efforts include supporting communities near the resort, helping preserve Balinese culture, reducing the property’s environmental footprint, and strengthening responsible business practices. Further achievements and measurable outcomes are outlined in the resort’s latest Sustainability Report.

The press release’s opening image also reflects the collective nature of the milestone, showing members of the Viceroy Bali team gathered with the certification in front of the resort’s traditional Balinese architecture.

Sustainability as an Ongoing Journey

“Achieving GSTC Certification is an important milestone for not just all of us at Viceroy Bali, but also the wider communities in which we share both privilege and responsibility through operating in Bali,” said Patrick Farrell, General Manager of Viceroy Bali.

Farrell emphasised that the certification should be viewed as a continuation of the resort’s sustainability journey rather than its conclusion.

“Sustainability influences many of the decisions we make every day, from how we operate the resort to how we support our local community and protect the natural beauty that surrounds us,” he added.

According to Farrell, becoming one of the first properties in Ubud to receive the certification reinforces Viceroy Bali’s commitment to responsible luxury while encouraging the team to continue improving its practices for guests, employees, local communities, and future generations.

Preserving Ubud’s Natural and Cultural Character

As an independent and family-owned resort, Viceroy Bali continues to position sustainability as an essential part of its identity.

Set above Ubud’s Valley of the Kings and surrounded by tropical rainforest, the resort offers private pool villas, dining and wellness experiences, and personalised service. Its approach combines the privacy of a boutique retreat with the facilities and service standards associated with an international luxury destination.

The GSTC Certification represents another step in the resort’s effort to ensure that its operations contribute positively to Bali’s environment, culture, and communities while creating meaningful experiences for travellers.

Further information about Viceroy Bali’s sustainability initiatives is available through the resort’s official sustainability platform.
